Needle holder forceps have stronger tips than than standard microsurgical forceps, yet they are machined to the same rigid specifications: While the stronger tips help these instruments to withstand the higher pressure with less bending, sharp edges and rough spots must be excluded as they might damage sutures.
Needle holders with the designation "C" in the article code are derived from a design by Castroviejo and are basically fine, flat handle needle holders. The designation "B" stands for round handle needle holders which were introduced by Barraquer.
Both designs originate from ophthalmic instrument designs.
